What should I get for first mountain bike for under 300$?
I want to start riding trails and doing some small jumps (rocks and dirt). I have a cheap “mountain bike” but it will not do. Basically I want something durable, especially the wheels. Also I prefer a hardtail since they are cheaper and usually lighter. I don’t care for anything flashy but something very durable for 300$ or less.
Also should I buy a bike at a bike shop/ sports store or off a person on cragslist?

Yes: V, aka linear pull brakes, mid-level Rock Shox, Manitou, Marzocchi or any Fox fork, and at least an Alivio, preferably Deore rear derailler. Sram components ok too.
No: Mechanical disc brakes. Work worse than V brakes, cost more, weigh more. Save your money here.
Yes: Craig’s list – bring bike friend to check bike out with you or stipulate that you want a mechanic to look at it; bike shop – more money, but you get service and a store backing the bike
No: sports store – they are clueless and provide no service whatsoever
Iron Horse is the right idea, but get a bike with V brakes, better derailler, and a better fork. It will deliver a better bang for your buck.
Note that hydraulic disc brakes are awesome, mechanical ones aren’t.
