Beginner-Motorcycles?
I really want to get a motorcycle and am still debating on whether or not I should take the class. I’m looking at motorcycles but I have no idea what I should get. I think maybe weight and height might have something to do with what you want…but I’m 5′6″ and 140. Any suggestions???
Thanks!
You should definitely take the class. Consider that half of all motorcycle accidents and half of all fatalities happen to people who have been riding a year or less. Thinking about that should impress you with how important safety is. It’s worth taking the class.
As for a first bike, a lot depends on what kind of riding you plan on doing. A small bike (like a 250) is good for learning because it’s light and easy to ride, and forgiving of mistakes. But if you plan to go long distances at high speeds you want something bigger, like a 500. You don’t want anything too special-purpose, like a modern sport bike, at least to start out.
Your best bet is to get an older bike at first, something about 10 years old. You’re going to be hard on your first bike, you’re going to abuse the clutch, and you might even drop it a couple of times before you get the hang of it. If you buy an older bike, you can sell it in a year for about what you paid for it, and by then you’ll have a better idea of what you want.
At your height you might have trouble with the seats being too high. Sit on a motorcycle and see if you can get both your feet flat on the ground. This is important especially for a beginner. I think your best bet might be a cruiser, because they have very low seats. If you have friends with bikes, ask to sit on their bike. If you get to talking to someone in a parking lot with a bike, ask to sit on his bike! You can learn quite a bit by sitting on a bike–and consider how comfortable it would be to sit there for a couple of hours.
